Depends on high up the light fixture is. It might heat the water only couple degrees F + your room temp.
I have a 5 gallon with a small sponge filter to keep the water from being stagnant (prevents mosquito larvae).
I'm not really sure about a 2.5g, but I kept about 30 shrimp in a 5g. They don't produce that much bioload and the plants should create a natural water filtration.

I have a couple. I used the AHSupply 13 W bright kits on then, just replaced one of them with an 11 W LED fixture I got from China. Red Sea Nano-Filter HOB.

LED looks like this one: http://zhgdled.en.made-in-china.com/...6W-8W-11W.html

Not that vendor though, I found that would sell single quantities

I just used black commercial aquarium gravel.

Anubius nana, Crypt. wendtii, dwarf Sagitaria.

it will probably be a low tech tank, but the organic soil should help me out alot i hope.

you can get away with a modern desk lamp with a 13W or 23W CFL bulb, depending on how high off the substrate. I have a 2.5 with no filter and just a small heater. The plants are growing well and I have betta in there that is doing fine as well.
