As something of a learning experiment with new substrate, I've set up a 10 gallon with a substrate of Eco-Complete + Tahitian Moon Sand (about 60:40).

Even after extensive rinsing, the Moon Sand clouded the water. Should I be planning to leave the HOB filter off until it clears (there will be no fish for a while), or does the filter actually help the situation? Can the fine particulates hurt the filter?

Thanks,
Kinketsu

Let the filter run it helps to clear the water. Filters are designed to take on particles. If they were'nt, they'd put the impeller after the filter media.

Marcel,

Thanks. I wasn't so sure about the presumably small, sharp, and hard particles from the sand. But it sounds like that's OK.

Aside: As you and Buck noted, Eco-Complete is a DREAM to plant in. I'm very happy with my choice ... thanks to you and others who helped me make that choice.

Cheers,
Kinketsu
