Stinking Marimo ball!

Yes, it's cute and fascinating. I've had a large one for 5 or 6 months. At each water change, I take it out and comb the algae off and swish it in tank water.

Yesterday as I was pulling it out, 2 rcs jumped out of the hole at the very last minute. I squeezed it slightly to make sure no more were in there, and some yellow gunk came out into the tank.

I got curious today, and repeated. When I squeeze it so that the small hole is elongated, I could see red bodies inside. Are they living in there?

I've also realized that the thing must be rinsed really, really well, as the crap inside it smells absolutely revolting!

At this point, I think I'm going to have to cut it apart in order to get all the shrimp out and throw it away. The shrimp today were acting fairly territorial when I picked it up and tried to get them to come out of hiding. They quickly jumped back on the thing as if they had something very special inside. Could this be their breeding ground?

Has nobody else seen the inside of a Marimo ball or noticed the stinky yellow crud inside it?

Does anybody have an idea of why rcs want to hang out in that environment?

Maybe this should be posted in the algae thread.

It's dark, there's probably dead stuff in there to pick at, and its enclosed. I would think it makes them feel safe.
