my floating grape :(

Hey all. Just thought I'd share these pics of one of my endler's before she pops. It's a grape with a head and tail Is this USUALLY how big they get when they're pregnant?

Looks more like "dropsy" than pregnancy, but that's just my impression.

If by "dropsy" you're refering to http://www.thetropicaltank.co.uk/hddropsy.htm, I sure hope not. That's an expensive fish :-/ When we got her 2 weeks ago, she was already pretty big, and she's gotten bigger, eats like a pig, etc. Hopefully it's just a case of "omgshesgoingtohave8millionbabies" and not this dropsy thing...

I don't know... She dose look abnormally large, but I had a pregnant guppy that looked like that one time and she had ~80 babies. So I don't know.

My thought was also dropsy - cause your pic almost looks like the sample picture on this page:

I really hope though she's just pregnant. Good luck.

hmm...well, she has quite the appetite, and I don't know what "grave constitutional signs" means. I don't think she's lethargic. She does stay put now and again, just like our last pregnant guppy did before she dropped, but she'll zoom around the tank once in a while too...

I have several hundred Endler's here, and can say with 100% certainty that that is NOT how big they usually get when pregnant.

I'm not saying she has any type of illness, she could just be "super preggo" and drop 20 babies or so

Or maybe she's just a piggy at feeding time as well as knocked up?

Good luck with her

Well, the easiest way to tell is if her scales are flat and shiny on hyer body, or if they're sticking out, I really can't tell from the photos for sure, but if she's eating ok, then she's most likely just prego.

Well, it's lookin like some of the scales on her under-belly are sticking out a bit. her sides and top are still smooth and shiny though. I just fed them to watch more closely than usual...she goes nutso at feeding, but it doesn't look like she's actually eating anything. She'll chase pieces of the food around and nip at it sometimes, but I don't think she's taking any in...

That's a bummer. I was all expecting I was just gonna get a bazillion babies, and now idunno. should I try to put some aquarium salt in and see what happens or something?

it looks like dropsy to me as well. dropsy is a symptom, not a disease. it can have varied causes, but my impression is that once they reach this point, the damage is done. in all cases i've encountered, no amount of medication will help. aquarium salt probably won't do any good, but it's not like it's going to cost you an arm and a leg. it IS possible that's she's just pregnant and bloated, but it looks like the scales are protruding, and i've never seen or heard of that in healthy pregnant livebearers. I usually euthanize any fish that develop dropsy for their sake... I used to treat every little ailment my fish had, but ended up with just as many deaths, if not more, than when I let things take their course, and eliminate obviously ill fish from the tank. (keep in mind I *do* have a UV sterilizer, so ich and the like are no longer a threat... so it's easy for me to advocate a "less meds" approach. those without UVs are left in a tougher spot). In any case, best of luck, and I hope she drops 500 babies for you! (if she does, can you spare 3-4 females and a couple males?)

This fish is weird. One minute she looks like she's about to croak, the next minute she's swimming around happily and eating like a flippin' pig. She looks kinda square now too...still don't know about her... She has been moved into a separate container inside the tank though

A couple of things you might want to look for:

1. Angle between anal and ventral fins and size of gravid spot. The steeper the angle and the larger the spot (you may be able to see the eyes of the babies in here) the more likely your fish is about to give birth.

2. Abnormal behavior. If your fish is remaining stationary/inactive either on the bottom, surface, or withing the confines of bushy plants she may be symptomatic of dropsy. Also if the fish ceases to defficate or does so abnormally she may also be symptomatic of poor health.

I have had this illness affect my several of my older female platies, but hopefully your guppy is just pregnant.

Id really love to see her pregnant but im afraid she has a very bad case of dropsy that one day soon will knock her out quicker than lightning. Im really sorry about the endler and i hope somehow she does get better or that you can prove me wrong some time in the near future and that she is mega pregnant.
