hair/thread algae

I keep my lights on for a longer period of time than I should probably, however it helps the algae growth on my glass which I really like for my shrimp.

Unfortunately, it also occasionally contributes to hair/thread algae growth in my tank mosses.

Will a H2O2 dip get rid of the hair algae? Is is the H2O2 bad for the shrimp when I put the moss back in? Is the world flat instead of round?

I don't know about the H202 but I added Amanos to my 12G just for that purpose...they love hair algae. Before I would just take my plant tweezers and try to pull it out..pain in the butt but about all I could do. I've only got the amanos in one tank, so I still pull it out in others. Amanos are cheap enough you could just add one to all your tanks

I much rather like the idea of natural instead of chemical. I'm under the understanding (did that make sense? LOL) that dwarf shrimp are safe with them, but is it a problem when feeding time comes, and do they throw off dwarf shrimp breeding?

Also, do they still eat hair algae if shrimp food is fed 3 times a week?

They are just food thieves. Basically I feed the amanos first, then everyone else can eat in peace. LOL! That tank I have that they are in gets fed 5-6 times a week and they still eat the hair algae. They are absolute PIGS. As far as throwing off breeding I've never heard anything like that so not sure.

I HATE thread algae. I have it in my PFR tank. I use a tooth brush to comb it out of the moss. Real PITA. I might have to invest in a couple Amanos.

I'm dealing with that as well. The H2O2 will help spot treating it as well as PP; which unfortunately, I'm out of both.

Funny thing...I didn't think of transplanting the affected plants over to the Amano tank. I just pulled off all the bad affected leaves.

I'm dealing with it too and spot treat with h2o2 is a pain. I've tried one day total black out and it hit the thread algae hard.

Default hair/thread algae

I've got this issue with moss in my long tank. I am not sure where it came from, but I pull strands of it out of my mosses every few days.

I've wanted a few Amanos for a long time. Any recommendations on where to purchase?

Nice...I've never had much success with a black out on hair algae. Maybe I'll try that again after I put the tank back together.

I know there's some in the WTS section.

I think I'm going to buy 3 from MsJinkzd for 3 different tanks.

I know she was doing quite a bit of traveling so if you can't get a hold of her for a couple of days that might be why. The Amanos I got from her were VERY blue....they've actually maintained quite a bit of their blue color. They are a lot prettier than I was expecting Just piglets!
