Eclipse 3 Lighting

I found an Eclipse 3 on closeout at a LFS, still not cheap, but better than prices on the internet + no shipping. If I want to grow glasso, will one AH supply kit with 13 watt bulb be enough?

That's 4.33 watts per gallon, and your pretty close to the gravel, I would think it would be plenty...

Pooky, Jonah, I figured the WPG where high enough, but since I read that the rule breaks down on small tanks, I thought I'd ask for opinions.

Rex, how many watts do you think I'll need?

That's a good question. And I'm not really sure. The problem with the wpg rule on small tanks it is ignores the true amount of energy you are putting into the tank. Glosso will grow great at 4 wpg in a large tank. But you would not expect it to grow in a 1 qt tank with 1 watt of light. Nor in a gallon tank with 4 watts. I'm betting that you might need to at least double the light. And don't forget that the Eclipse design does a very poor job of lighting the foreground of the tank.

My glosso is growing slowly but steadily in a 5 gallon tank with 20 watts of light from screw in compacts equaling out to 4 wpg, on the other hand i have red ludwiga, dwarf chain swords, java moss and red crypt wendtii that are growing like monsters in that much light. The tank is 12 inches high, hope that helps!

OK, I'm going to try to cram 2 x 13W kits into the Eclipse 3. :lol:

I've seen it done with the basic 2x13w on a 6g with room to spare, might be a bit tight on a 3g, but I think you could fit it.
