New to forum - in Worcester

Hey everyone,

Am working to setup my first planted tank ... and I live in Worcester. Just wanted to say hi.

New to everything but have eco complete and an eheim 2217 en route. Will get either a 50 or 65 gallon tank ordered shortly ... And thinking of an aquatic life dual t5ho setup. No co2 (yet).

Recommendations for where to get plants in my area? Also - where does one get drift wood?

Am still thinking through everything and (trying) to take my time. Any help always appreciated.

Thanks!
Damon

Default Where to buy plants

Hey Damon, I don't know if you ever get down there, but Providence is the spot for plants. from you it should only be ride down 146

Aqua-life in Wickenden st in Providence is absolutely the place to go for plants. They have hands down the nicest stock anywhere around. Not a bad place to get fish either, The prices are very fair too.

That's not a bad trip ... I do like ordering things online too and I know stone folks have had luck with that. I will check this out at some point.

Great to know. I read a lot about options online but the stores here have such a limited selection. Maybe I will reach out at some point.

Posting in here, and h4n can get you a lot of things. We're all connected one way or another. Unique aquaria is good, and only getting better they are in woburn.

Welcome :-)

Welcome to the addiction!!!

Han has some great plants and there is a definite growing number of us around to trade with :]

For driftwood let me know if you find somewhere! I just ordered a box from Tom Barr (plantbrain) he has some amazing pieces, but there really isn't much around here :/

Just a note, depending on how stocked you are going to keep your tank the 2217 might not have quite enough flow by itself for a 65 gallon.

I had heard of that place. It's a little bit of a drive for me but I do go to Boston from time to time. I will try and check it out.

I will probably end up buying something online. I have two young children and don't have much time to drive around looking for stuff. Time is precious.

I think I am going to end up going with the 50 gallon tank. I really like the aesthetic of the height. Something about the 65 makes it look a little too tall for me. I think the 50 looks a little more balanced.

When you say flow, do you mean the amount of water it can filter? Or the movement of the water? Or do you mean both?

There seems to be a lot to learn. It's pretty exciting starting something brand new.

Worcester city. Which is also in Worcester County. So I guess the answer is both. Smile.

Just the power of the water flow, eheims are amazing filters! There may just be some "dead spots" or places where gunk will collect. I don't have any experience with tanks over 29 gallons so other people may be more helpful. The equipment subforum is great as well. Oh and just toss the thin black carbon filter pad that it comes with.

Will toss it! I get the feeling that filter media is as varied and personal as fish and plant choices.

After seeing this 65 gallon though it has given me second thoughts about the fifty:

Haha yeah, general consensus I have gathered as well. Most people go with a whole lot of bio media or ceramic rings and coarse sponges. Some people use the fine polishing pad but they clog up quick and are expensive after a while, quilt stuffing/batting for the win :]

And that is a beautiful use of vertical space! Some seriously talented people here with super inspiring tanks.
