33 long and 20 long start over....
So, my 56 column is nearing a time that it needs a refresh. I learned allot from the tank, and what happens when you don't plan very well and overstock/complicate the livestock, the poor choice in lighting and the CO2 failing. Also, the stand was poorly built and does not function well. Granted my 56 came about from consolidating my 20 long and two 15 columns, so I guess it was a learning experience. Been really wanting to improve even more and I like the lines of the longer, lower tanks and I was (and still am) planning my dream tank, 165 gallon custom 96" inch, once I find a more suitable place for it, so in the mean time I have to work with what I have and learned.
I am going with a 36" high, 14" deep and 96" wide home made stand. The 33 long will be placed on the left side and the 20 long that I have will be on the right as a shrimp tank only. The height different between the two tanks is 1/2", so it will look much more seamless IMO. A second 20 long will serve in the stand as a quarantine/plant storage tank with just a fluval 70 HOB and a heater, nothing crazy. I drew up my planned setup for the 33, using local rock (granite like Stone Mountain)) that has been rounded in a river/stream. I also have found that having hang on back filters are good for picking up allot of trash out of the tank, they need attention much more often and they interfere with the natural schooling habits of fish. Thus why I am going to a single canister, and plan to use the Aponogenton to soften the flow of water and pull it longer when it grows.
Here is my list of what I plan on getting for the tank:
200 watt heater
48" Finnex Ray2 light
Florite, Florite black sand, Carib sea African ivory sand for the non-planted area
All my current CO2 items with new line and diffuser
Ammania sp. ‘Bonsai’
Alternanthera reineckii "mini"
Eleocharis sp. 'mini'
Aponogeton crispus "red"
Cryptocoryne crispatula var. flaccidifolia
Ember tetras (30)
Green Neon tetras (20)
Peppered cories (3)
This whole project will take me a few months, but I want to do this right and make a good build thread as well.
