3 gallon Walstad Betta Vase

So here's my 3 gallon Walstad vase project.
Supplies from Lowe's:
65W clamp light
Miracle Grow Seed Starting Potting Mix
5lb bag of "beach sand"

Started out planting Anacharis, Brazilian Sword, and Wisteria into moist soil.

Then I "capped" the soil with the "beach sand" and carefully filled the bowl with conditioned tap water. Then added my Water hyacinth.

After 24 hours I added a betta and a nerite snail.

4th day update.
Parameters read:
Ammonia 0.25
Nitrite 5.0
Nitrate 80

I attribute these parameters to the soil I used.

So I added some Java Fern, Java moss and Horn wort.

Watching parameters closely daily to hopefully see ammonia disappear.

That mix is too hot! You want Miracle Grow Organic Choice potting Mix.
Please take the Betta out asap to avoid finrot and possible death.

I'd just dump that soil out. It isn't going to work for this. I've done alot of walstad tanks and small vases/bowls.
You really need to go with organic potting mix to avoid these issues.

Also, for a proper walstad bowl, you need tons more plant mass. Fast growing stems, rosettes, and alot of floaters.
