That is indeed the flying fox, Epalzeorhynchos kalopterus. The alternating black-gold-black bands are the easiest indicator.

Thanks, He/she is also the most active in my tank. Chases my tiger barbs but for some reason, doesn't even notice the otto's in the tank.

Default Flying Fox or SAE?

hmmmmm I thought the true SAE had the stripe running all the way through to the tip of the tail - just like the picture. which would mean it is not a flying fox?
need more replies

It is a good looking Flying Fox. They are terrific fish, SAE have much more muted coloration

I believe Aquaticz is right - the true SAE's black lateral line runs right through the tail fin - the flying fox's ends at the body/base of the tail.
That's an SAE.
Latchdan's post is also correct - check his link.

But Latchdan's pic in his link shows that his fox has very clearly visible defined scales. Mine arent so clear, particularly on the top half of the body.
Although both do have the lateral stripe go to the tip of tail which means i'm sticking to assuming my fish is the fox and his is the SAE. But more responses can help me confirm.

By the way, i have two of them and about a week ago this one was chasing all the other fish around really actively and at one point the other fox. Then they got up beside each other for a split second. It looked like they were mating. That would be cool to experience. I hear it is not common in captivity.

That's a flying fox. SAE's don't have white on the edge of their fins. Also, SAE's don't have that dark broad stripe under their dorsal fin.
