Can you split Vallisneria?
I have 3 jungle vals that are taking over my tank.
they are about 6 feet long and i was wondering if i could "split" them. Im going to sell 2 of them, but would like to make the one im keeping smaller so it stops blocking the light for the other plants.

Although my jungle vals dont form runners as often as my other types of val I have spit them after their base was thick enough. they are very prolific growers I often wonder if I should remove them as they are a constant prunning hassle

Why do people even plant jungle vals? Just ordinary Italian vals or contortionist vals will grow three foot long leaves - just narrower. You can cut those leaves off at the length you prefer, but the leaf then slowly dies back from the cut edge. My experience was that before they looked too bad I had another half dozen new leaves replacing the cut one. I used to cut and remove enough val leaves to fill a quart jar every week from the 125 gallon tank I had.

I plant jungle val because I have a big and deep tank. Ordinary vals would not do the job.
I usually trim my vals from the edge. It does rots to some extent after I did this, but it usually will stop at certain point and the leaves grow long again. A trick to harvesting vals is to wait for the runners to appear and grow thick. Wait until the height is at least 1/2 of the adult plant, then you can cut them off. Removing too early is not profitable as I've been told that the tiny runners are taking nutrition via 'runner umbilical cord' from the mother plant, other than photosythesysing on their own. My... they sell for $15 a bunch? (compare to merely $0.30 here in the tropics)
