I was in my LFS last night and was looking at the bubbles in thier diffuser....(hagens system).....as the bubbles came out you could actually see them getting smaller as they diffused.....now my question is does anyone know if they sell that diffuser by itself for say replacement parts?......seems to me that would work wonders on my tank......:hehe::hehe:

That bubble counter sounds interesting. I just may have to put one in my 55. I'm also thinking this might be a good setup for my hex tank. I'll have to think on that some. :hehe:

hummm? just say the add on the back of a magazine... 1 for every 20gal.
i just bought a 30 gal. tank... didn't like the idea of doing all this work for my 20.
sounds like the packets are probably yeast and I'd guess, baking soda??
I think i'm going to stick with the soda bottle set-up for now.
That reminds me... i need to get to work on a reactor... $1 or 2 worth of plexiglass and some DIY :hehe:

The first packet is probably yeast, the second packet might be gelatin, for a jello yeast set-up. Big Al's also sells it online, the set or just eh diffuser, but with the set you get CO2 resistant tubing which can sell for $15 separately. FWIW, mine is still going at the same pace it started at, 6 bubbles a minute, set up 11/17, 2 1/2 weeks ago. I have to clip one stem plant almost every day as the stem plants reach the surface and start to lean over the tank.

I picked up a set on Monday as curiosity got the better of me.
I have replaced the diy system on my 68 liter tank with this and so far Im very impressed with the results the plants in the tank are pearling very nicely and showing good growth in only 5 days ( seems my diy set up was a little naff)
the bubble counter/ diffuser will come in handy as I have decided to switch this tank over to run from my pressurised system on the main tank (probably due to me being a control freak )
but Id say it is well worth the money.

I have read on this board that pressurized CO2 is Purer (correct spelling??) than yeast co2 now im wondering is there any difference in the quality of 2liter bottle co2 then from hagens co2?

Im not seeing any residue on the co2 counter/reactor that I normaly see with the 2 litre diy method.
so they must be using a better yeast than I was using.
so in my case I would say it is purer

I was using sintered glass airstones which are very similar to some co2 diffusers on the market and @ 1 for 3 they were replaced very frequently.
the diffuser with the hagen kit is perfect to allow me to add this tank to my pressurised system as soon as I pick up some more co2 hose

Sounds good. But a 5 gal. carboy is too much. How large do you guys mean it should be for a 30 gal?? Also, should i just divide the ammounts mentioned in the recipe with two??

if you were to use a 1 gal. jug...divide it by 5...
i've only used CO2 (DIY yeast type, 2 ltr bottle) one time a few years ago for a very short period of time.
by the sound of things, going with a 1 gal. on a 30 doesn't sound too bad. I'm going to set up a 30 in another week or so. (I'm waiting on some light stuff to show up at my front door)
