Banana Plants

Mine have about 5 pads all the way to the top of the water. They are about 3 inches across. I understand if I cut them off new plants will grow from these pads, is that correct?

Looking forward to responses on this. I've tried that on my Banana plant surface leaves, and have never gotten anything for my trouble but a rotting leaf floating on top of the tank.

For what I understand, based on my readings at http://www.thekrib.com/Plants/Plants/Nymphoides.html, it is the flower that you cut, not the pads, which will give you a new plant.

I tried just cutting the pads for almost two months, with no luck. During that time period, the plant would send up a new pad to the surface about every two days or so. I would wait one day, then cut the stem at about three inches under the pad, and then I would let them simply float in the tank, hoping for something. NOTHING! NA-DA! simply rotting pads.

Now, If someone could inform us of how to get this plant to flower, then. Then we would be getting somewhere.

I found on SimplyDiscus.com a tread about the propagation. Apparently, it can be done from the pads floating on the surface and not from the flowers. Westie has a photo posted that shows roots growing about 2" below the pad, and the pad is still connected to the parent plant.

Hopefully, this will lead the way to better understanding of how these plants propagate.

Never had flowers on mine.. Once went away on vacation, light had blown sometime or another on one side of the aquarium... Needless to say, the plant kinda went to goo but floating at the top were 5 leaves started off with roots.. I was quite amazed... I had tried many times cutting them to allow them to grow, never worked... Came apart on their own, and lo and behold, new plants.. Strange...
