I am finally giving in to my inner geek and buying a Palm. This is mostly for work purposes but I am making sure I am buying an MP3 capable model so I can at least listen to music too. I don't need a lot of extra features just something that I can use for contacts, schedules, appointments, Word/Excel documents (viewing anyway) and small notation (passwords etc).
This is the unit I am considering, I'll be getting a 256MB Memory card to go with it (for music), and a colapsable keyboard (maybe). http://www.palmone.com/us/products/h...ds/tungsten-e/ Any suggestions? |

I own both a Handspring visor and a Dell Axim. I much prefer the Dell Axim. I have used a bunch of Palm based units and a couple of different PPC units and I have to again give the nod to the PPC units. With the Dell Axim you get both a CF slot and a SD slot. You can use the SD slot for memory while using the CF slot for a wireless lan card or a GPS unit or what ever you want. Or you can slap a 1 gig CF flash card in there and play MP3s from the unit till your ears fall off. And the best thing is the base model Axim is also $199.

There is a huge array of different and similar devices, so it's hard to recommend one particular one, depends very much on how much you want to spend and what features you are looking for.
To me, the main differences are palm vs win, keyboard vs graffity, color vs b/w, wireless or not, expansion cards... The concept of convergence of cellphone and handheld is intriguing to me, with the heavy weight on cellphone, and the palm somehow integrated. I think the Treo is going into that direction. Nice to schlepp one less device around... cellphone, pda, notebook, five different chargers

To me that seems a huge waste of money. I would have gotten a PPC device to start with and the free phone is good enough for me every time.

I prefer to have it all separate. It is a big pain in the yokozoona to replace all your data if you were to have one of those units...

We use the HP IPAQ 5450s. Nice units. THey have a great display and come preloaded with Windows CE 2003, Word, Excel, and Outlook. I think they do MP3s too. We also purchased Sierra Wireless Cards and now have nationwide high-speed(??) internet, email, and VPN access. This device also doubles as a wireless phone.
I would definitey recommend this unit to others. Just my $0.02, Sean. |
