Will this stand work?

I bought this stand from a fish store that had custom wooden stands available. This stand is made to hold a standard 10 gallon tank and I have an ADA 45-P which about 10 gallons in size. The tank fits really close on front and back. So close it appears it could be a 32nd or 16th of an inch over on each side. Its also open on top (see pics).is this okay? I planned on using the ADA garden mat as well. Also in the pics, you might see it, but the right and left sides have a small gap on each side between tank and stand, but I figure the mat fixes that. Should get another piece of ply cut for the top and screw it on or glue it on to give a complete flat surface for tank to be on? Also maybe an 8th of an inch wider from front to back if needed? Help me out guys

The foam should help with that slight gap.

Not sure about the minimal overhang. I wouldn't be comfortable with it, but I also tend to be overly cautious with stands and such. getting a piece of plywood to fit the bottom of the tank would probably work.

If I did a piece of wood on top, how thick should it be?

I'm really not sure. I know sometimes people put tanks larger then the base, and use something like 3/4" plywood or so, but your tank is really close in size to the stand, so you could probably use something thinner.

I've no idea how thin would be too thin though, I tend to try to err on the side of excess when dealing with stands and what not.
