Cannibals!

Today, one of my females who was old and purple didn't make it though her molt. She was lying on her side and twitching. But I was shocked to see another shrimp come up and started eating her alive! He was prodding her with his pincers and it took a few times before she shook him off. She died of course but within hours they've eaten her to two little bits.

I guess I'm just surprised to see one of my creatures eat one of its own live.

I have seen them pounce SO quickly when one is stuck in a molt that I often wonder if the stuck one puts out some sort of distress signal. I mean, shrimp can be eating minding their own business and if one gets stuck in a molt they swarm and attack.

Not sure why that is surprising. In the wild it probably happens all the time.
