Planning on getting the MrAqua 12 inch cube, 7.5 gallon. Can I use this fixture with this?

Do you mean able to in terms of being able to attach it? Or able to in terms of effectiveness? There are pictures in the thread starting post, are they insufficient to answer your question?

Well I'm completely new to this so forgive my ignorance. I have looked at all the information on these units and also on the sponsor website. I was questioning wheather one unit is better than the other and if this is overkill for a small setup.

I wouldn't say the -R is overkill at all on a 12" cube, by any stretch. I have one on mine and it's just right I think for a low-light, non-CO2 setup. I get very little algae but still noticeable, if slow, growth.
