What is laterite?

What the difference if anything between laterite and flourite?

I went to www.bestfish .com and they sell this stuff called Substrate Gold under the North American Laterite name. It comes in a 24 oz and it treats 20 gallons, more than I need for my 5.5 gallon but I can always add the rest to my 29 gallon. Its on sale for $9.

Laterite is VERY different from Flourite.

Laterite is a powder-like substance and is added to the tank BEFORE water is added, it is nearly impossible to add it to an already estalished tank, unless you mix it with very little water and put it (it will be like clay) under the gravel, but I don't know how this workes.

Flourite is a porous clay gravel that is a very good and easy way to go. Flourite doesn't cloud the water (if it is rinsed enough) and is easily added to an established tank. It is porous, so it absorbs nutrients from the water collumn.
