CO2 sources

Hey, NC. Looking for a good source for CO2 cylinders in the Triangle area. The best price I have found so far is from Metro Safety in North Durham, $68 for a filled, 5# steel tank. Can I do better than that? I'm in Chapel Hill and I don't mind taking a drive. Thanks, guys.

I paid pretty close to that down here in Sanford....$62 if I remember correctly. Seemed more expensive than other people on the site in different areas of the country were quoting, but still not crazy. I would recommend just paying a couple of extra bucks and getting your cylinder close to home, that way when it's empty you can make the changeover quickly. Good luck.

Good advice. I think it came out to $71 for a filled 5# with a new inspection and a fresh coat of paint. They will fill it while I wait for $15 I think, and they are right around the corner from Triangle Tropical Fish, so having 30 minutes to kill is no prob.

Glad you got your tank. Sounds like yours is prettier than mine (with the fresh coat of paint).

Just went to Triangle Tropical Fish yesterday and spent a bunch of money. I think they have the best prices around on dry goods (about the same price as mail order once you factor shipping into the equation).

i think it's a great shop. i don't really spend money anywhere else. but they have cut back on their fw fish to expand the marine stuff. maybe i better get a reef

Just setup my first co2 system. I have a 100 gal tank and live a fair ways from Durham, and the fire extinguisher place only seems to deal with 5# cylinders for fill-while-you-wait. I only make it to Triangle Tropical once a year or so and think I'd need to fill a 5# tank more often than that. But they were very nice and responsive to my email, and if I lived closer, I'd go with them for sure.

Anyway, I live near Mebane, and A-1 Auto Parts sells 20# cylinders (only). It is initially pretty expensive, but the convenience for me was the key. I payed around $180 for a full tank. They swap out when needed for another full 20 pounder for around $35. I can return the cylinder at any time for a refund of around $135/140 (don't have the receipt and agreement with me right now, but that's the ballpark). They have Saturday hours - a huge plus for me since I work long hours during the week.

Thought I'd post in case it helped someone else who lives out this way.
