Opinions on AF's MacroMicro Mix

I was wondering what you guys think of this mix... I've been plugging it into dosing calculators and it seems like a pound will only last two or so months with EI whereas I've read that people have used the stuff for more than a year.

When I use the same calc to figure out the relative concentrations of nutrients when prepared by AF's mixing instructions, they are way too low especially when it comes to Fe.

Anyone have any input? Much appreciated.

What is AF? Do you have a link to the mix you are using?

I'm assuming the op is refferring to aquariumfertilizer.com's macromicro mix. If so, that is basically pmdd.

To the op, pmdd is somewhat outdated, espescially since it lacks phophates and as you have already figured out, its pretty lean on fe. You are better off getting the individual ferts and dose ei. Then use the calculators to dose the needs of your tank. The bad thing with premix ferts is that not all tanks are the same and all have different needs, i.e. some need more no3 than others. To answer your question about why the micromacro mix doesn't last as long as ei is simply packaging. The mix is only 1lb total with the ferts being mixed in equally, so 1/4lb of each fert. When people buy ferts for ei, we mainly buy the individual fert in 1 lb increments. We end up with 4lb of ferts covering npk and csm instead of the 1 lb in the mm mix. Hope that makes sense.

Yes, thank you. I was referring to aquariumfertilizer.com's mix. I was planning on buying the components separately and mixing for a total of 4lbs, but even with their maximum recommended dosage, nutrient levels seem inadequate.

For anyone curious:

Rather than using their mix, since you are already purchasing all the chemicals separately, you could just do EI dosing. You would have the option of liquid or dry dosing, whatever is more convenient to you, and if you choose the former, you can just mix all your macronutrients together in one bottle and dose.

I haven't ordered anything yet, but I plan on just dosing the components separately.

Does anyone here use PPS?

I used to use PPS-Pro before switching over to EI. I didn't like constantly fiddling with my dosing as the plant biomass increased/decreased.

For more information on PPS-Pro, you might be better off over at APC.
