Seen a few tucked deep inside a giant wad of moss...perhaps there is hope.
Do they always molt shortly after they crawl off the mother? Saw two molt right after I found them and her last batch that one I found molted and was stuck. Also asking because her belly looks like a lot of shredded exoskeletons are hanging from it...hope she hasn't been picking at her little stomach buffet all day. Looks like two left to come off. Should be dang near 30-40 in there but I've only found about 6. There is so much crap in that tank in the way of moss, plastic plants, driftwood and PVC I did lucky to find those. Hope there are more hiding. Also, how quickly do they grow? I would like to keep a few to replenish at least 2 that I've lost but will likely sell the rest and wondering what age is a good age/size to let them go on to other homes.

Babies molt all the time, usually once every 2 or 3 days, because they grow fast. My babies always hiding in moss, it's a good place for them, they eat stuff they find in there and can molt somewhat safely.
I just sold a ton of them, haha, I thought it was around 100 juvies in there, but it was closer to 200 |

I'm talking within the first hours of walking off the mom...cause this seems to be a trend I'm noticing. I'm used to babies molting every few days, but these molt in under 2 hours once they walk off. At least that's what I've noticed with at least 3 of them. Goodness I just want like TWO to live...200...whew boy!

It's probably normal to molt that soon, do they molt just fine? I mean, if they're having bad molts 2 hours after they hatch that would be something to look into, but if they're molting well, I'd say it's normal.
I don't know what I did right, but they weren't really breeding for about a year, and now they're always berried. I haven't changed anything, they're in 2 year old Amazonia, no driftwood, no rocks, no decor, just wall to wall floor to ceiling moss. Doesn't even have a filter. |

Well the little guy from the last batch was stuck in his so no, not a good molt. One little guy today had a little hanging off of a couple of legs but the male went by and spooked him and he flung backwards a few times and it came off.
Mine have been breeding steady for the last 3 months, just babies disappear despite my best efforts and that other female I'm just not sure about. The thing is is both times they have gotten berried the biggest female gets bred first and the other female gets bred second, sometimes the same day, sometimes the next day but always back to back like that. I dunno but part of me wonders if the male has enough in 'reserves' for the second girl or if she's truly sterile. She just molted yesterday so I expect her to be berried by Wednesday. Before she molted she still had 4-5 eggs attached to her...all bright orange (have read it means the eggs are not fertilized). Now that the other female JUST had these babies and obviously hasn't been bred in the last few days, I'll be able to tell if this female is truly sterile or if my other theory may have something to it.

There will be a dominant pair in your tank that will be berried more often than others. What could be happening is that since you only have one male and 2 females, the male chooses the best female and only mates with her. Not all of my adult females have babies in my tank, if I was really vigilant I'd remove unbreeding females and put them with males in separate tanks, but I'm not (:P)
Any idea what the GH and KH are in the tank? Also temperature? |
