Moss
Why can I (NOT).... Grow moss of any kind? All my other plants went brown then came back my moss gets here lookin nice as hell then turns brown why?????
I got two 6500k 20w T12 sittin and inch above the water the "new moss" just below it in a quarantine tank of sorts it's grown on the SS mesh but started to let dirt go all over my tank an looks as though its gonna do what all my moss does Turn Brown and just take up space in my tank it's also sitting right over the DIY CO2 mix. Isn't moss supposed to grow in any water condition as far as the water goes its fine for fish an plants but not moss I guess. Last edited by newbieplanter; 02-07-2013 at 10:58 PM.. Maybe you can try answering these questions so that we can narrow down the variables...
what is your water temperature? water hardness? tank size? light? stocking? position of moss in tank? (how well lit is it?) PH? other params? what kind of moss did you get? |

Temperature could be a little high, moss prefers a nice flow (to keep them clean), and cool 70s... maybe even lower.
The corys will be happier with lower temps too :3 lol maybe someone else can come along and help you with lighting and water hardness. I'm quite the noob when it come to that. My own flame moss loved wood and grew beautifully in a 82F tank, but shaded from direct lighting. I think it did well because it was gradually acclimated to the higher temp... personally I'm not a fan of meshes ^_^ |

Mosses don't like warm temps and intense light.

I've had moss turning brown when the light was too intense, basically the light source is burning the moss. I think moving the moss to more than 10" from the light would help. Mines are at least that far away.

For some reason my peacock moss is doing fabulous in super intense lighting...(3in directly under 23w cfl)? and right in front of the filter outflow :3

Why do you keep the temps so high? None of these fish or livestock require such high temps. Consider dropping temps down to 72-74 and everyone will be happier (and less baked)

Over the next week to make everyone happy ill lower temp. When I bought the fish from petco the sign on tanks said 75-82deg to keep fish an like I posted I have moss in the window temp about 70-75deg in a jar an nothing an yor not getting better than the sun for light that is what we strive to get in our tanks on a smaller scale tho plus petco they keep the tanks at 82 a tropicle fish store told me the same

You sound a bit down with this at the moment. Consider qualifying the advice feom people. Petco is not well known for keeping the best quairy plamts not livestock. Their job is to sell for profit and not foster the hobby.
You are merely keeping moss barely alive by putting them in a container filled with water. Moss, like all living things need several sources of nutrients. Consider going to home depot or walmart and picking up some liquid fertilizer from the garden section. That should have enough npk to boost some new green growth in that container. This advice comes from my own experience rebailitating some unwanted brown moss. The results were amazing. Try it and you will see. If u want a photo of the one i use, i can take a pic later
