Question

Covering sand with black rock

Well a while ago I did a 10 gallon planted tank with the carribean sand at the bottom. It's been two years and now the sand jar looks nasty. I was wondering If I can just go to Walmart but some black rocks and cover the sand with it. Would the plants be okay? I just don't wanna take out all the sand and spend 25 dollars on more substrate.
