ADA Aqua soil depth?

Just a quick question about Aqua soil.

Hoe does Amano get away with mounding you aqua soil in the back of his tanks? Sometimes the substrate is over half as high as the tank is deep!!! So why no gas build up, or other problems you usually have with deep substrates???

Thanks,
Drew

my guess is the shape is relatively uniform of the granules and water flows more freely.
