Pruning roots on water sprite

I let some floating water sprite run wild for a few months, and today after thinning off the dead growth, I'm down to some manageable plants... with some really, really long roots.

Will any harm come from nipping them in length a little before putting them in the gravel?

Cut the entire root off, not just a piece of it as it will rot.

You can cut them as short as you want. Mine were a foot long when I pulled them out for a trim. I trimmed them down to maybe 2 inches. These plants bounce back quickly
