Using Mangroves for low tech filtration

Has anyone tried using mangroves as a low tech filtration solution? I'm thinking of a riparium-style tank, and I like the look for mangroves, so I'm very curious about this combination.

(I'm in the very beginning stages of planning with only the look I'm going for in mind... no equipment, nothing... and a 85g tank in storage.)

I have three different mangrove trees and three other brackish estuary plants going in my 65G riparium setup and they're doing great.

Don't grow 'em just for filtration. You should grow the mangrove plants because they're cool.

How are mangroves for filtration, say in a refugium? I just started a hob refugium and I've been seeing this come up alot. There's always some who say they grow too slow and others that they work well.. is there any definitive word on it?

I'd go for something faster growing than a tree if your main purpose for it is filtration.

If it's just cuz you want to, then go for it lol

Don't think they'd be up to it if you're just using mangroves alone, of course it depends on your stocking.

What's a good growth rate for mangroves? I think my propagules are doing well, but I don't really know what to expect. They're very cute, by the way.

The mangrove trees generally grow pretty slow. Like lauraleellblp said they might not be all that effective for biological filtration. But the are fun to grow because they look cool and they are biologically interesting.
