Thinking About Going Rimless. Thoughts?

So I recently bought a forty gallon tank at PetSmart ($1 per gallon, what a steal!!). I was thinking about taking the rim off (top and bottom) it to enhance the look of my newly renovated apartment. I thought it would really add to the aesthetics of my place and make for a really dope and clean decoration. My landlord said I couldn't go over twenty gallons but I doubt this would really be a problem. I will be taking the rim off with my exacto knife starting very shortly. I will post pics once I am done and it is full of water.

Here is the tank currently:

Just recently got the CoreLife AquaLight for it too! Let me know what you guys think - any tips?

Thanks for the responses, any help will be taken into consideration. I am really trying to impress some guests I have coming over for a dinner party tomorrow for the Superbowl - go 'Hawks!!

A forty gallon is pushing it. If your going to do it I'd just do the top not the bottom. Look at the bottom piece of plastic that runs across, that's a support brace.

Terrible idea with the cheap tanks from petco. Blow out waiting to happen.

+1 to both of the above statements, you have to realize the dollar/gallon sale aren't the best Co strutted tanks by any means. If you must derim it only do the top in my opinion

You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

Bottom is unattached, about to start the water transferring process.

I'm a huge fan of rimless tanks. All of my tanks at my house are now rimless. Its such a nice clean look. They were older tanks but I'm a firm believer that if the tank comes with out a center brace you can derim it with no fear of it blowing out.

Is it a floating bottom? You might have a problem if it is. I always say go for rimless. Completely frameless isn't as big of a change in looks as de-rimming is. How does the top edge look? I derimmed a Walmart 55 to find the edges under the trim was machined. It was awesome.

Took the rim off, filled it all the way up. It is looking awesome! I see a little bit of bowing, thanks for all your kind words. I think that this is going to be an awesome aquarium.

I don't understand why you asked for peoples thoughts, then completely disregarded every single response as if no one said anything. You clearly were planning on de rimming the whole tank regardless. It's just strange that your post is titled, "thinking about going rimless". Your clearly not thinking.

Aquariums with no brace that isn't siliconed to each side bow. It happens. You just don't usually see it when there's a plastic trim to hide the fact.

I love that you're doubling what your landlord said was ok and then further tempting fate by derimming the tank.

Well I just woke up and I should have taken most of your thoughts into consideration... Being the stubborn man that I am, I ignored all of you and now face the consequences. I am in jeopardy of cancelling my Super Bowl get-together and even worse I may face eviction for damage beyond repair and negligence. Pray for me fellas, my future is looking very bleak.
