CO2 system question
Ok, I got the Nutrafin CO2 plant system with the Hagen ladder, and it's on my 10 gallon tank at work now. Haven't seen any bubbles yet, but instructions said it will take 2-10 hours for bubbles to start forming.
Question: Should I pull plants out that have algae on them and try to clean the plants of the algae? I'm assuming the algae will benefit from CO2 as well as the plants, yes? no? |

I don't recommend you use the yeast provided with the kit. There's no telling how old it is. Mine didn't work at all when I bought the Hagen kit. Do a search for C02 recipes, there are a lot out there. From what I've read, wine yeast lasts longer than breast yeast.
Also, there is no way that the little container they give you is even remotely adequate (unless you like making up new yeast mixes reeeeeeeeally often) so consider using a 2-liter soda bottle instead of the tiny little container they give you.

If you are going to use a container other than the one provided use a juice bottle instead of a soda bottle.
Using a soda bottle is one of the worst ideas I have yet seen in this hobby. Soda bottles have a very small cap and neck which makes it a pain to get the sugar in and they are VERY unstable. I know that many of you youngsters think that soda is juice from the cola tree but it's not. Soda bottles suck as CO2 generators. Juice bottles are much better and believe it or not the juice is much better for you. |

You're right about the soda bottles being bad. When I had diy, I wondered why the he-- I was using these bottles. Of course, once I had the caps drilled and everything going I was too lazy to change over.

Sounds good dawgger! Thanks. I've seen the first bubbles this morning from the kit...it's mesmerizing to watch the bubbles climb up the ladder..lol. Rex, gotta agree with you there. I have some juice bottles that I've earmarked for my home CO2 DIY after they're empty. I'm down to one soda per day now!! That's down from about 4 per day before I changed my diet and started working out!! |

got in this morning...this ladder thing is pretty cool, watching the bubbles climb up it then pop into the water column. I'm going to see if I can't find just the ladder for my home DIY CO2 stuff.
