Cory cats for beginners
Could anybody recommend some good hardy cory cats for someone who's never kept them before?

All of the medium sized more common ones such as C. aeneus, pepper cats, bronze/emerald cats. They are time tested beginner fish. However, most cories aren't hard to keep or breed.

I really like the look of peppered cats. Will they harm red cherry shrimp?

Only cories that go well with shrimp are dwarves.

Obsessed? Maybe

If they can fit it in their mouth? It's dinner. They can be aggressive feeders, as well.
I keep shrimp with Corydoras habrosus and Corydoras pygmaeus and both of them eat the youngest shrimp but tend to leave juveniles alone and larger shrimp alone. Provide plenty of hiding spaces - tons of moss - and you'll have some young shrimp that will survive to adulthood.

Cories are awesome! Just make sure you get a school of them.....around 6 (more is better). Many will tell you that they won't school if you get different species, but every case is different. I actually have 4 albinos, 1 peppered, 1 julli and 1 panda, and they all do well together.

When it's relax time, they chill and have a beer together in one spot. Otherwise, they are working like crazy! Three or four at a time will swim, alternating, up and down the glass. It's hilarious to watch. But they do this together.

For the sheer enjoyment and activity factors, I love the habrosus! My wife calls them the "Charlie Chaplin" cories because they always seem to moving around and wagging their tails.

I personally love c. hasbrosus. I am planning on getting 10 of them once my new tank is set up.
