WAY COOL!

Can you do this with the HOT model? you know the hang on tank one? Do you need the diatomaceous earth?

I've heard that you can, though I've never used a Magnum filter myself. You don't need the diatom powder, but it makes everything go faster and will extend the life of your micron filter (because you can rinse it off and all the gunk is trapped in the powder). The diatom powder alledgedly will let you filter out smaller particles and even some parasites like ick.

The cheapest way to get diatom powder is from someone who has a swimming pool with a DE filter. They use gallons for each reacharge of there filter, so are usually happy to let you take a small amount.

Sooooo...the cheapest way to go is to buy Diatomaceous earth from a pool or spa store? Is it the same stuff...should be right?

The problem is, they want to sell it to you in 50lb quantities. You probably don't want that much around.

Every time I have established a new tank in my current place I have had haze that lasted anywhere from 2 weeks to two months, depending on the level of DOC's in the water.

Guttboy, I have used the HOT Magum for polishing water. You can buy Diatomaceous earth from BigAls for just a few bucks. They sell sizes of a couple of pounds which should last you quite a while.

Just insert the Micron Filter Cartridge into your HOT Magnum. Then add 1/2 cup of D.earth to a bucket filled with water. Now run the HOT Magnum on the bucket while stirring up the D.earth. After a few minutes the bucket will be clear and the filter properly charged. Now just transfer the filter to your tank and you are set to get rid of the haze.

This method worked for me when I had a bad outbreak of green water. Cleaned it up in just a couple of hours... mario

Ok...UPDATE! I have had the magnum HOT 250 running all afternoon and evening...its been on 18 hrs or so with NO change in the water quality. SO...I figured I'd call some pool places for DE. The first place I called (5 min from my house) they sell 25 pound bags for $11.63 after taxes for diatomaceous earth! BIGALS sells 5lbs for 11.99 not including shipping. Gotta go with the pool store on that one.

So if people are looking, call a pool or spa joint...they will help ya out...BTW the smallest bag that the local pool jt sells is 25 lbs I did not call to other places.
