!@#$% columnaris
columnaris....gosh darn columnaris...
Over the years I have been super careful with the fish I add, quarantining them and so on. My female cherry barb showed signs of it tonight.. Very very early signs. Shes pulled and will be put down humanely. As for the rest of my fish... Should I say screw it, lower the temps tonight, pull all the plants tomorrow and treat with marycin 2? *I assume its not plant safe* I can put the plants in a bucket while I treat. Or should I wait and hope that no one else gets it. I have 25$ one of a kind fish in this tank that I DO NOT want to lose. |

I had a case that started with one fish. Lost over 20 before it was all said and done (2 days). It hits fast and hard.

I've dealt with it at work before, but never at home.. I've turned down my heater to 72*F (Tanks normally 80* ) It's so early that I doubt anyone else would have noticed it till it got worse. I am hoping I got the fish out before anyone else got it..The question is do I treat with no other fish with symptoms as a precaution, or take my chances.. Ill be picking up the meds at work tomorrow, but I wont be home till 1pm.. I hope I've given my fish a fighting chance by lowering the temps. |

Since it's so highly contagious, I would say do a full treatment of the tank just to be safe. IMO with a disease like this, better safe than sorry.

That's what I have figured. I've seen it take out whole tanks in a matter of hours before. I just hope I got it in time and I don't lose my little boy.. The other fish are easily replaced.. But my cockatoo male... He's one of a kind. I just feel bad for my plants Having to be uprooted and moved out.. I think I'll toss them in a bucket of clean water, and put a heater in it and put them out side so they can get nice sunlight while I am treating, granted Ill put saran wrap on top so nothing funky gets in. Gave me a good laugh. I hope you got it in time, too. I would think so, but I won't hold my breath on it. At least with treating it, you'll give them all a good chance. |

Maracyn-2 will not harm plants.

Suffered though a bad case a few months ago, lost 3/4 of all the fish in the tank. I've started keeping my tank at 72 since then with no i'll effects on the fish. There was a recent article on SeriouslyFish that talk about perhaps a lot of us are keeping aquarium temperatures too high.
