Planted Tank Obsessed

I usually get asked "are you going to eat them when they get bigger* As annoying as it is answering the question a lot. I don't mind it too much, people need to learn one way or another

the answer is "yes you can eat them, but for $2-$100/ea this will be the most expensive meal you will ever have and you will not be full from it" followed by a 1,2, head kick combo

One of these days I'm going to find (or make) a miniature round barbeque grill and use it as a tank ornament in my cherry shrimp tank.

Hmm. I enjoy some of these questions. To be honest, I enjoy getting people interested in the topic.
While I tire of people asking to eat them, I -- much like AVN -- respond lightly, assuring them they can try one. I bet it'd be a tasty bite. I find it flattering when people ask me if my plants are real. I get to tell them about the hobby. I find most times when I tell them about it, they wind up getting a tank. Patience is a virtue, and when it comes to this hobby I find most of us do have patience. On regards of the cost of shrimp? I won't tell the causal onlooker the cost of the shrimp. I don't tell people what I make a year, (which is rediculously low as a college student) and I find they don't really care as to the cost. MABJ's iDevice used for this message :p

I *try* to keep in mind that often people are asking "stupid" questions as an ice breaker or because they really are curious, just maybe not good at starting topics of discussion. Its hard to remember that though in the heat of the moment. And of course some people purposely do it trying to make passive aggressive digs and to be a holes.

People ask me all the time why I "waste" so much money on my tanks. They sit there and stare for sometimes an hour or more, ussually answering there own questions.
I got a lot of crap for buying a bonsai tree. My boss sarcastically asked me if I could bonsai his 100ft maple. I told him I would bring over my chainsaw and shape it like a part of the male anatomy just for him. Lol |

Depending on the person it can come down to this:
Someone: Do you eat them? Me: they eat me. Someone: what? Me: me. Toe nails and belly button lint is what they eat. Someone: ... Me:

"Can you grow pot in that tank?"
"Is a Blue Tetra a schooling fish? Is a Congo Tetra a schooling fish? They are? Ok, give me one of each. They will school together." "I sent you the wrong shipping address. The shrimp will die. I want my money back." "This is saltwater, right?" "Wow! Look at those magnets! How they clean the glass! Wow!" - common reaction to using magnet glass cleaners in public. "All our fish are wildcaught! Cardinals? Yes we have. They are wildcaught too." - an Asian fish exporter. "This is BBA. It is a very bad algae. You do not want it. I can not give it to you." - me talking to a guy that wanted BBA for his tank. Minutes later I said "Here it is. Just don't tell anyone I gave that to you." |
