How do you densly populate drift wood ? Examples inside.
These for example. I know you can for example tie a fern to driftwood -- but how would do this so densely ? It amazes me.

Good tools.
Growing in. Experience! Patience. Plenty of light, CO2 and appropriate fertilizing.

^ I Understand that much I think -- and I will have this in time. I would like to know how it starts. The logistics behind the very first steps. Maybe some tips can be gleaned ??

http://youtu.be/rx2sJl0IckM Last year ADA streamed a seminar and posted these videos later. Maybe you will get some hints on how tos from these. And here is a video with the larger tank several months later. It is the last one shown I think. http://youtu.be/Sfa_oS2_SlM There are other set up videos by master scapers out there.

I have a couple of rocks that i have very densely covered in peacock moss. i started with rather thick bunches and then I used a shower scrubbie cut apart so it was just a sheet of the plastic netting. I think that really helped it give it a good starting point to spread and be very filled in.

Great start!
I suck at attaching plants to rock or wood. The only way I can do it is w/ glue. I was able to cram some petite anubias into crevices in my drift wood & some java ferns. But they are not exactly well attached. And they have a bit of algae!
