THE ONLY TIME, i use one of those is when my water smells funny.. and its usually uneaten food, or a plant that has been floating and had a little film next to it..

now that i've gone sump i almost wish my ammonia would go up.. but it doesn't

i've dumped food in just to see and its all effecientl handled by fat fish and bio filtration

Good: I thought this would provoke some mild controversy.
And I do know that a lot of people can tell the complete composition of h2o by taste.

The trick question is: how do I keep the color on the right yellow, regardless of the tank?

@Chlorophile: nice colors but a sad story

You guys made me laugh. Thank you.
Maybe I'm testing a toilet?

A little bit of orange on the right won't hurt anything...........

Chloro, your tank seems to be coming along nicely!

oooooh pretty...

And not to take this off topic but can someone tell me why my GH took 23 drops to change colors? My KH only took 3. My GH has always been high but not that high. Should I be worried? Everything is growing and eating well, but I did lose a pleco this morning.

@So_Fishy: I like your colors better. GH tests are notoriously all over the place. Sorry about your pleco

Your first line of defense
for the moments
when the thought "Oh ...."
goes through your brain
microseconds before an open bottle of KNO3
hits the surface :

Now you might guess the reason for my initial picture.

Bonus question: what is that plant and what is it known for?

Hint: you have to see the 18"+ long roots on that sucker

Haha maybe its just the photo but it looks like nitrate is 80, not 5!

GH test kits go bad quick, don't worry about it too much - if things go awry buy a new test kit and check it out but your probably just getting bad results.
That or you have some kind of crazy rocks in your tank that are messing with GH.

LoL I thought it looked high when I looked at the pic too but it wasn't that dark in real life. My KH/GH test kit is new and I only have 2 rocks in my 55 that are the size of a half dollar and shouldn't affect the water that much. It really bugs me it registering that high. I'll retest it tomorrow. In the past its been 12-13 but never 23.

I've had that plant before OVT in a water planter I made.... water hyacinth??
