What Should I Look For When Starting to Make MTS?

So I decided to try my hand at mineralized topsoil. I went to Lowes and picked up the cheap organic topsoil. The brand was Gardener's Pride and was about $2.50 for a 40 lb bag. I never had heard of the brand but I compared it visually with the the Miracle-Gro Organic Choice stuff and it was much darker and had less wood, actually the cheap stuff has almost no wood chips or rocks. After getting it home I started the mineralizing process, I put it in a tub and added water. After letting it soak for awhile I've noticed it has clumped a lot and formed extremely hard little balls of soil that are muddy on the outside and dry inside. My question is is wether or not this is normal.

Also the soil seems to have a lot of brown clay in it, is this normal, good, bad, any thoughts on it would be great.

Thanks,
-Joe
