The Pseudomugil Tank

Some of you may recognize this tank. I have it for the last 5 years. Used it for keeping tiger barbs, one of the fish i love. This was the thread back then :

After many rescapes and many various species i kept in this tank, i wanted to keep rainbows here. espescially the beautiful Melanotaenia trifasciata and boesemani. but i dont think my tank large enough for them, so finally decide to keep pseudomugils here. A genus of beautiful small blue eyes fish.

not much of a scape here, i only used this tank for a while to keep some of my favourite plants. no hardscape, just some plants here and there.

I'd lobe to know what substrate you are using, I have red flint but it is too lightfor my taste, but I like the fact that it is not all one color. what are you using?

the seller called it iron sand because it's heavy, but i don't think it's actually iron. it's just ordinary sand used for buildings here.

i don't know about red flint but if its too light it will be a problem at the planting stage. it won't hold your plant firmly.


and now unto the fish, some are not coloured up yet just added them 2 days ago

this is the real reason i want to keep pseudomugils. lfs here called it Pseudomugil sp red neon. probably a different color strain of Pseudomugil paskai.

somehow i can't keep shrimps in this tank. they just end up dead within the day or two even after i acclimatized them first for hours. i read before that some cryptocorynes release some kind of chemical that's deadly for shrimps. is this true or something else kill my shrimps. i have red cheries in my other tank without crypts and they're absolutely fine.

Nice looking tank. I love the fish. Crypts definitely dont kill shrimps. I would check the hardness of your water maybe?

I've been checking these photos out for the past few hours and have to say, those P. furcatas and other Pseudomugil are gorgeous.

Makes me wish they were more popular in the United States.

Your tank just goes to show how attractive and colorful they are. Can't wait to see more photos.

yeah i was kinda frustrated because i can't put shrimps there. my water parameter is the same with the other nano tank. red cherries breed a lot there. the difference is that my nano has no co2 injection. maybe co2 is the issue? but then again my fish are doing good.

thanks for the kind words. Pseudomugils are not that popular here too and it's hard to find them in stores. the furcata is common but not gertrudae and signifer, probably because of the washed up color and they're not showing their potentials yet.

they're still adapting in my tank too i guess. some of them just stays in the dark top righ corner while others swim freely.

hei thanks, i have been collecting anubias for years. coffeefolia is my favorite.

Is it possible the algae eaters are going after your shrimp? They harassed mine every time, seem to have a mean streak towards certain things.

i have never seen anything like that. what kind of algae eater?

another question, i'm thinking to add some juvenile Melanotaenia rainbows in this tank. do you guys think it's a bad idea? i kept some boesemani awhile back and they were really peaceful. what do you think? if it's a bad idea and will cause those pseudomugil harm i will abandon the idea.
