Gettin my 70 ready to go.

So many versions of Miracle gro, This look like just dirt, no "fillers". I am going to sift this also.

I managed to find some Miracle grow soil at "wally's". Hope its the good stuff.

With the Iron content listed, do I, should I, add more?

Can I boil this, as I have read in the past?

I was thinking of putting the soil in a large tub, doing water changes in there, good Idea? I know I'll be playing with mud later on.

I'll let others chime in, but basically you want the cheapest dirt you can find. Miracle Gro has extra stuff to help your plants grow. Good for potted plants, not as good for the tank since they can leach out. See the nitrate, ammonia, nitrogen, phosphate and potash.

Note - I haven't been involved in a soil tank for 8 years, so other stuff may be "right" these days.

As long as you have a good solid cap and the soil substrate isnt too deep nothing should leech. I prefer a sand cap for how compact it is, it holds down the soil very well

Anything that is dissolved in the water in the substrate will work its way to the surface and then leach out into the tank water. Solutes always move into areas of low concentration from areas of high concentration. But, if the rate of leaching is low enough the plants will just use it as food through the plant leaves.
