Just a reminder to be very careful with open cuts being exposed to your tank water. One of my friends things he has contracted granuloma after having a rash on his arm for quite some time.

If you have a normal immune system, it should be of little problem to you. Does make you realize what may be in your water though.

Doesn't have to be especially virulent bacteria - just getting a wound infected makes for a nasty week. Do what I say, not what I do.

Any small cuts on your hands and a fish tank are a bad idea.
Washing hands after working with tanks is always a good idea.

You can also get bacterial infections in your eye from splashes of water.

I wash my hands/arms with soap. I use alcohol gel afterwards.

I hate getting my arms in the tanks - I have psoriasis on them and I worry about infections, even with washing right after. I also worry that I will forget if I have meds or lotion on my skin & go into a tank without washing them off. One day I'll kill my fish! My best friend is a stained glass artist and she always has small glass cuts on her hands. She's also a retired nurse so when I show her this she will freak out - lol.

There are 2 types of gloves available.
One is a disposable, thin, flexible glove. It is shoulder length. Veterinarians use them for large animals.
The other is a much sturdier, long lasting glove. Designed for use with salt water tanks that have sharp corals.
I have the last sort. My arms sweated so much the fingers of the gloves were full of sweat after working just one tank!
