Samuels 30g Planted Tank

We bought this tank for our sons birthday, I was keen for him to keep some fish, a good excuse to reignite a favorite hobby of mine from the early 90's....
It is an Aqua One 850, fairly large filter containers - self contained and neat at his mums request.

We planted it quite heavily to start, but left it basic, stock lights and some Flourish and Florena ferts. Started with two platys, and 2 flying foxes.
All dead in a week after 2-3 weeks, ammonia 0.5 (nearly), pH 8.
And I thought myself a reasonably competent fishkeeper.... this couldn't do....

We have high teched his tank....

LED lights with electronic dimmer/timer (2x 60PAR fittings 6500K)
CO2 injection, with pH controller
Proper fertilisation with macros and micros (looking into EI also now)

After dropping nearly a grand at one very nice aquarium store, I asked the clerk for some mature filter media - he obliged, with a couple of pounds of 2 year-old sintered glass tubes. Added to the existing filter media, and hitting with Seachem Stability daily at moment.

After a week of the above, with no fish, the plants growing really well, sending off dozens of rootlets and new growth, we added a school of 7 little tiger barbs.

Ignore temperature reading on pH controller - dang temp probe cord isn't long enough to reach the water, that is room ambient temp....

Daddy is already planning that 100g planted tank he always drooled over when at uni years ago, when all he had was time (and no cash!).

I hope he isn't scarred too much by the previous new tank syndrome disaster....
This morning he ran over to the aquarium....
"None are dead yet Dad!".... oh dear....

Security Question
While balancing on a piece of wood, two inches by four inches known as a 2x4, John and his friend Sally both spotted a dalmatian inside of a truck with sirens. The animal with John and Sally is a _ _ _?
