Another way to get your fish

This was going to be a PM, but I decided to post it up.

Say, you want 25 Diamond Tetras. Your LFS does not have it and paying $45 in shipping to some AquaBid dude is against your religion. What to do?

Maybe a little known fact: Petco does individual life-stock special orders and Diamond Tetras are on the list. And you do not have to pre-pay.

I believe the title is Animal Specialist, that's the person who does all life-stock orders for the store once per week. Not a bad person to make friends with. People tend to remember dogs more then their owners - I take my Dane almost everywhere and that does help to break the ice.

If they do take your order, couple of ways to handle it. You can always ask to be called when they come in and request that they keep them in the shipping bag for the pick-up. Or you can wait for couple of weeks for the weak to die in the store before you get them.

In any case, QT is a good idea - tetras get Ich pretty easily.

I believe they run about $3.60 each but do go on sale once in a blue moon for ~$2.50. I personally do not believe it's worth the wait and the hassle, but you can place the order when they go on sale and ask for a rain check.

Petco also has a 30-day money-back guarantee on fish. Sometimes, big chain stores do come in handy. If you ever decide to get a lot of Cardinals, PetSmart is the way to go. But that's another story

Keep in mind that not all stores do special orders - I work at a Petco, and our store does not have extra tanks for quarantine, and we have relatively low aquatic sales, so we send customers to another store in the area for special orders. If a store is willing to do it for you, though, you'll want to talk to the companion animals manager, or the aquatics specialist.

Thank you for posting this OVT I visit Petco all the time with my Dobie and the "Fish Boss" and I are always talking fish. He did tell me about what you just stated above. I always read so many terrible stories about Petco fish that I have always passed on the idea of buying fish from them even when they have exactly what I want! But...in this instance and coming from you, with proper use of Quarentine, I guess I will go for it because 25 Diamond Tetras is exactly what I want

Have you seen the video link in post # 42 (I think) on the Glowlight Tetra discussion? I swear they look like Blue tetras in the vid, but they are backlit...anyhow the maker of the vid says they are Glowlights and he should know...my point is; they have the most gorgeous schooling pattern. Mind you, it is a 250g tank I think. If you love schooling behavior you have to treat yourself to this vid. Glowlights might be on my wishlist now too - lol.

I haven't, and I couldn't find it. Could you post the link foe me? I have had Glowlights before and mine were not schoolers but shoalers instead.

I just did a copy & paste from the Glowlight thread in the fish forum. I keep looking at this guy's videos in as large a format as possible on youtube, and honestly, I think he has Blue tetras! lol The next line, above the link, is part of the other thread...well, who knows - his Emperor tetras look blue-ish too - must be the lighting. I don't see white tips to the mystery tetra's fins...(which would indicate Blue tetras).

If you guys are talking about Glowlight Tetras (Hemigrammus erythrozonus) they are pretty little guys. Check out this video it is an awesome showcase of them schooling together.
