Fire Red Shrimp turning dark red, purple or even partly black?

Those shrimps that turned into dark red or some sort of purple died off eventually. Is there any particular reason for that? I have a feeling that it has to do with water hardness...it seems to me that they were not able to molt...

Anyone?
