corkscrew val info

So I just saw a pic of some in a member's tank and I really like it's looks. Does it have the same requirements as regular vals?

It's funny, I had vals in a 55 a few years ago and it just withered away. Now I have some in a 125 but planted directly in front of a Koralia nano 425 and it seems to be thriving (at least for the three months I've had it). What do these plants like? I'd really like to try some corkscrew vals...

i'm pretty sure they require the same as reg vals, since its still basically the same plant.

I used to have corkscrew vals in my 20H with 65w PC lighting. That stuff propagated like mad without any extra ferts, just weekly water changes. I used to sell tons of it back to my LFS. Probably the easiest plant I've ever kept.

I have a hard water, ph8, dirt w/sand cap and no co2 show tank. I tried Corkscrew vals in a test tank plantet in Eco complete and they melted quickly. After a couple of weeks they started coming back slowly. In the above mentioned setup, samething happened however they came back quicker and more vibrant. I have a dozen or more at the back of the tank and I can see now that they are gonna be sick! Interesting thing is, what I planted was in really poor condition. I waited two weeks ( giving a settling in and root development period )and heavily pruned all but the healthyest growth off. That seemed to really kickstart the growth.

haha - I'm of an age where if you say something is "sick" I think you mean it. I thought you were losing the second batch - lol.

I have a ph that runs 6.5 or lower in all my tanks, but I do all dirt tanks with caps so we have the same set up there. Also, when I tried vals a few years ago (in my first dirt tank) I didn't know about osmocote caps - which reminds me I have to redo my 125 this weekend...

I also since learned that when a plant looks like its failing or even gone, wait. Then wait some more. In my newest tank (the 125) I've had plants I thought were totally gone for over a month suddenly send up new shoots - and I don't mean crypts either. Seeing new things, learning as I go, that's a huge part of what I love about this hobby. If I knew it all I'd be pretty bored!

It's funny that I can snip stem plants, like Ludwigia, replant, and they take right off. The Vals consistantly went down hill before "stabalizing" and showing new growth. I think it also helps to clean the dead and dyeing stuff off the plants. It was hard for me to do this at first because I wanted to preserve as much of the plant as I could. I have snipped plants down to prractically nothing only to have them come back strong whereas plants I left alone and did not trim heavily, took much longer.

Also, Im as old as the dirt in my tanks. I've learned to say say things like "sick" and "stupid" to describe good things from my kids. haha
