Question

Shrimp's Population

I decided to have a shrimp-only tank and bought 10 or so fire reds. Well, I blinked, and now have hundreds of shrimp.

They live in a ten gallon. I've kept close eye on parameters and all is well thus far.
I'm estimating I have about 400 with 20+ berried constantly. I plan on figuring out a way to reduce numbers, due to the "10-20 shrimp per gallon" guideline.

I guess what I'm asking is: for now, will this be a problem if parameters stay stable?
I heard that once they reach a maximum population density, the breeding will slow and almost stop. Is this true?

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure it is more than 10-20 per gallon! Some claim that breeding slows, some claim that it doesn't. If anything you could always unload some on the swap and shop, or ROAK them! I definitely would take a load off your shoulders out of the kindness of my heart.

Generally as the population overwhelms the tank's carrying capacity then lack of food and poorer water conditions will cause their breeding to slow. You should cut back on feedings for starters, and secondly you should sell/give away some shrimp since if you really have 400 shrimp in a 10g tank then you're WAY overstocked.

If you do decide to give them away then I'm sure you'd find plenty of people right here on this forum willing to give them good homes. *wink wink*

You will be fine as long as you have a bunch of moss and good filtration. I had 1400 plus in a 20L

I would be willing to buy some from you also. My Red Fire shrimps were doing well and now I have hardly none left. i thought my assassin snail in there could have ate some of them. I since removed the assassin snail. I would not mind mixing some new Red Fires with mine. I live in San Diego, CA. If you do decide to sell some how much will it be. I think you can ship them in a flat rate small box for $5.35 . I received some like that.

It's not so much that the breeding rate slows down as much as the number of attractive ones diminish. Inbreeding has a negative effect on the colony which is why many add new shrimps for genetic diversity.

Thinning out the less attractive and adding new stock would be a sound next step to consider.

If I had some left after my 3 month sell off I would. I have sold about 1100 in the last 3 months. So I am down to my solid 300 breeding stock, adding 50 more from a seller on here soon, just add genetics. I started off with bu sets of 25 from 5 different people last Jan

Hahah! I love how this thread has turned into a "give me your shrimp" page!

But seriously.
I want to buy your shrimp.
