So now that you've had the G3 up and running as long as you have, what's your take on it? Would you choose it again if you had a closed stand where the aesthetics are not so important as they are with the open metal frame stand in your room? Do you find it "clogs" or requires cleaning of the pre-filter more than once a week? Reviews of the filter around the interwebs vary greatly.

I'm still vacillating between a 306 and a G3. I like the seemingly easy maintenance of the G3 but would be using it with a Hydor in-line heater AND a Sera Flore 500 reactor, the two of which in tandem will limit flow substantially, perhaps too much for even a little 17.4 gallon tank. It's hard to say without a frame of reference.

Hope this doesn't detract from your thread, perhaps I should open a new topic and kill this post if you'd prefer to not have the clutter here!

No worries that question is directly related to the thread.

For what I want & the tank as it is today, I think it's outstanding. I have a DIY 10PPI Foam pre-filter foam on the intake. That does tend to load-up but the shrimp love feeding off it. The clean schedule in my tank probably could be pushed out farther? But, I don't find it a burden to clean the pre-filter and mechanical cartridge weekly as I'm changing water anyway. The monthly rinse of the bio-filter is so easy to do, I don't think twice about it.

I've found over the years with many different filer systems, if I's easy it gets done more often.

Filter clog & need service more because of the human in the equation than the tank. At this point I don't do much planting. A few wks ago I move two baby C. Nurii away from the glass. When I replanted I turn off the filter for two hrs and let the tank settle. The little MTS I kicked up settled on the bottom and wasn't drawn into the filter. Then 3-4 days later it when into the sand cap.

It might be a bit too strong for a 17gl tank unless you plan to use the spray bar. Since your going to push water through Hydor in-line heater AND a Sera Flore 500 reactor you might be o.k. with the standard duck foot return.

As you can see I went to the acrylic lilly pipes from E*B*A*Y.

Hmm....I didn't know that Amanos would also prune off dying leaves for you too!! Do they prune all leaves, or just java fern, Frank?

Also.....where do you get your Amanos?

Cleaning the filter more often due to the ease of doing so, is exactly what appeals to me. I'm fine with once a week filter maintenance, especially if I'm removing material that would otherwise get blown around and decompose over time due to bypass, etc.

I'm encouraged by your comment about a G3 being potentially too strong for a 17g. Too strong is just fine as I can fix that, and I'm hoping to use acrylic pipes as well. Thanks for the feedback.

Back on topic, my daughter also enjoyed your most recent video and is finally feeling the awesomeness of scrimps. I haven't walked her through your substrate process on the Toxic Ten, one step at a time.

"Prune"??? What is Prune?

Unless a big hunk of leaf is floating around I just let my tank be totally organic. I kinda find a dying leave or two to give the tank a more REAL look.

Got got a dozen amanos two weeks back from Rachel http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/fo...play.php?f=139. Got a few locally back in July. Found a few jumper/sucides, found one gravid female dead. Never see more that 8 at a time, could be as 16 in there? Same with the Cherry Shrimp.

I'm sure the Cherry Barbs are picking a few off during molts.

This is a great setup you have here. In the video you can really see the quality of the light that the par38's put out. Very sleek and clean tank, glorious!

Thank you, I could not be more happy with it. From the start the idea was to have simple tank presentation that did not look like typical display.
