Rena return line question

On my soon to be high tec planted tank, I'M using a Rena filter, should I use the spray bar or jet nozzle .........Also should I have The return skim the top of The water or point it away from the top, more towards the middle of the tank ? little confused on this. Thanks Rob

Personally I would use the Jet nozzle I have found that spray bars never seem to work well. Also I like that the Jet Nozzle helps to circulate things around the tank better so more stuff makes it to your filter inlet pipe.

I agree with the above. I dislike spray bars as they always seem to need more maintenance. The holes stop up. The water level is always getting off so they make noise or if placed wrong they can shoot water over the side when the tank gets a bit low. This only happens when I'm gone and a neighbor is watching the tank!
I just don't use them as they do reduce the strong flow around the tank which I prefer.
I would not want the return drawing from the top as it might come out of the water if the tank level went down. This would cut off all filtering to my fish as well as potentially running the filter dry to ruin it.

Try to set up the intake and output something like the illustration below from ADA.

I have a xp1, started with the spray bar and went to jet nozzle. Would never go back to the spraybar.

Spray bar on my xp2 is working way better than my "properly mounted lily pipes" ever did.

Ps anybody want to buy some 16mm lily pipes?

Thanks for showing that chart Jeff, I was also contemplating between a spraybar and normal outputs.

Seth I'll PM you.

Did you DIY your spray bar or can you buy them from fluval?

I like the spraybars. Sure, they can splash when the water runs low. Good sign I need to top off the tanks.
