BTW! So I've been asked to set up a lesson plan surrounding this tank-build in the Kindergartener's classroom. I want to bring in samples of things like mini critters, like planaria, hydra, seed shrimp, copepods, scuds... and different algaes, like hair algae, cladophora, anything else I can bottle up and bring.

So this wishlist is going to be a little bit gross but if you have them and are willing, could you catch some and bring to the BAS Auction? I'm looking for:

Big Planarias
Big Hydras
Copepods
Pond/Bladder snails
Malaysian trumpet snails
Assassin snail
Any other little critters that are visible via magnifying glass
(I already have seed shrimp, blackworms, and ramshorns, and Albert may hook me up with scuds)

And greens for them to manhandle:
Something covered in BBA or other fuzzy algaes
Cladophora clump
Staghorn algae
Green spot algae on a leaf or rock
Java moss
Anyone have a moss ball that I could borrow and return? Kids love moss balls... I promise to replace it if it gets torn apart.
And anything else that you think a 5-yr-old would find epic...
(I already have a big clump of hair algae heehee)


EDIT: big quantities are very welcome, lol, gross I know.

Oh boy Jellie I might be able to help you with algae...I know I did a number on some plants but I might have some with something the kids can feel the difference between.

Hi Jellie, I have assassins, mts and pond snails, plus a few kinds of little ramshorns, probably several kinds of algae and I might have a mossball hiding in a tank somewhere too.

I've decided to take off work because I was feeling left out, so I'm down for full festivities next Friday.

I have a tank with planaria and some stringy type algae. Also ramshorn, mts and pond snails just in case.

Yes please to all! I'll take as much as I can get.

I also just updated the list to include nematodes and shrimp molts. I'm thinking that I'll break the class up into 5 groups of 4 kids, or 4 groups of 5 kids, and each group should have a sample of each, if I can collect enough.

I have a small terrarium with a roach that has a lot of springtails living in it...do those count? I see springtails living on my floaters too? >_>

Theyre like...terrestrial though? Got to figure out how to catch them, they live in the dirt. But they do come up for food. We'll see what I can round up!

edit: i am also goiing to assume they are springtails and not some really weird bug thing

I think I would go and I am only maybe 10 minutes drive from there.... How does the auction work? You pay with cash, checks, or credit cards???

Either way, I want to start some terrestrial vivs and everything I've read says springtails are useful critters. If they turn out to not be springtails, I'll never know.

If I recall correctly it's cash only. At least I don't remember anyone paying another way.
