Murkey turtle tank

So I just got a new set up for my painted turtle a little while ago it's a 40 gallon tank with a nice canister filter and a sprayer. It is all ready nice and I figured it would keep the water clear but that is not the case. The water is starting to get murkey and I just did a 5 gallon water change a few days ago. does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do to make the water not murkey?

On another note are there any live plants I can put in with the turtle or will he tear them up?

How new is the set up? Sounds like the tank hasnt cycled yet (look up cycling a aquarium, it takes time for good bacteria to build up to be able to utilize/filter the waste the turtles produce). If the media is already seeded then maybe the turtle bioload is too high for it or maybe a waterchange without being mixed enough with dechlorinator killed off some beneficial bacteria in the filter. Not sure on the plants with turtles.
