Will these lights work?

Hey all, I used to have dual 29 gallon tanks. Well several changes later I have upgraded to a single 55 gallon tank. My 29s each had a 2 bulb T5HO fixture and my new 55 came with 2 24'' 15-17 watt t8 hoods. While I want to go low tech this time around I think those hoods are probably useless for any plants, even low light ones.

Since I don't want to buy yet another hood can I reuse these if I hang them above the tank. I have two concerns, first being is this going to be too much lighting no matter how high i hang it and my second concern is that the two fixture lined up are longer than the tank. Will the fact that the lights are longer than the tank cause issues?

If this doesn't work I may convert the cheap hoods with a cfl modification but I wanted to see if I could use what I have first.

I have a single t12 over my 55 and it keeps plants alive. I wouldnt exactly say anything flourishes, but i dont use any sort of ferts in the tank, its purely trimmings and baby runner plants to help stabalize the params.

Security Question
While balancing on a piece of wood, two inches by four inches known as a 2x4, John and his friend Sally both spotted a dalmatian inside of a truck with sirens. The animal with John and Sally is a _ _ _?
