Making obects tank safe

I have been having a marathon of of a show called "tanked" which specializes in custom aquariums. They seem to use clear coat on lots of random stuff to make it tank safe.. Can you just clear random objects to seal it up and pop it in the tank (once dried/cured?)

As long as the clear coat is aquarium safe, pretty much. Of course, you have to ensure that the underlying material will not eat away at the clear coat (rendering it ineffective).

I had the same thought when I saw the previews of that show - I never actually watched an episode but from the preview they looked pretty reckless. Quite a few things I saw looked completely impractical from a cleaning/maintenance standpoint.

Is it worth watching, or do they just fill random crap with water and yuk it up for the camera like every other "reality" tv show?

It's the aquarium version of Pimp My Ride. Actually both are really reputable and do amazing work for regular customers who want something that isn't interesting enough for a TV show for non hobbyist.
