Algae Grower

Just wanted to say thanks Kyle. I know I'm a recent joiner but I have already learned a lot from this site you created. Without your help my tank would just be an idea floating around in my head with no means as to create a thriving fish tank. Thanks for everything! Maybe you should start a new fish tank in honor of passing the torch!

Hope things don't change much. This is a great site with lots of knowledge and great people.
Adam has some big shoes to fill and some tanks to be planting. You can always start with a nano tank on your desk...I am sure some RAOK will fill it for you. |

I was wondering why there were ads on the main page now...
I hope for the best but I've seen two other great forums go downhill once they were sold. One of them I was a member on for 7 years. Common sense says that companies like verticalscope buy these for one reason, to make money. Either way, thanks KyleT and have a great one. |

Hmmm...well we already have those now, the question is will there be more? Will they be larger, more offensive and obvious? That would definitely turn me off, but we'll have to wait and see. According to Kyle, there won't be much of a change, so I suspect (and hope) that things will remain the same in terms of current advertisement practices, placement, etc. I know how that is. I just bought a 90P and Gods help me if it isn't heavy without anything in it, so I'm dreading the day when I have to move out of my apartment. Just transporting the thing is going to be an issue by itself!

Well I didn't mean to instigate any conflict, but I am worried about the proliferation of ads beyond the level of what we currently have, as I think that would constitute a distinct and undeniable disincentive to participate in TPT community. Ads turn me off and research shows that depending upon the frequency, duration, placement, and content, ads can turn off a wide variety of people for a wide variety of reasons. Thus, the avoid that and the consequentially predictable decrease in member activity and new member enrollment, I hope that this change in ownership does not presage a change in revenue strategies vis-a-vis advertisement on the forum. As an academic you'll forgive me for raising this point, but I feel compelled to do so, as I believe that a more informed membership, the more informed the debate and conversation about the future direction of TPT. As I pointed out earlier, I have relied on TPT and only TPT for a variety of reasons and no doubt, there are many members (and indeed non members) who fall into the same category. Perhaps Kyle or Momotaro or some of the other Admins could speak to this, but it would be interesting to know by survey or poll, how many TPT members are members of more than one forum or just this one alone. As I think that information would indeed affect discussions about the appropriateness of changes to the current advertisement scheme. I think people who are members of just this forum would be highly motivated to go elsewhere for their informational/community needs if changes were implemented.
@ Rainer, I don't think that all ads can be blocked? If so, how? If all the ads can be blocked then this (happily) obviates my entire discussion.

If anyone is using Firefox, install the add on "Ad Block Plus" and poof the ads are all gone.
![]() I do not see one anymore anywhere on the site. |

I visit a wakeboarding forum and in between post, say post 3 and post 4, will be an ad. Every 15 - 20 post after that will be another. It's very annoying.

The only time I see the ads or word links is when I don't log in.
